Road Connectivity

Chennai is situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal is the capital of the Tamil Nadu state and it is the fourth largest metropolis in India. Chennai is a major transportation hub for road, rail, air and sea transport connecting major cities inland and abroad.

Road Network

The total length of road network in Chennai city is 2780 km. Chennai has radial and ring pattern of road network. Prime radial network comprises 4 major National highways connecting hinterland locations like Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pondicherry etc.
National Highways that converge and run through the city, viz., the NH 4, NH 5 & NH45 connects the port to Inland Container Depots like ICD Tondiarpet (10kms), ICD Irungattukottai (35Kms), ICD Whitefield / Bangalore (345Kms) and beyond,
There are 30+ CFS’s (Container Freight Station) and 5 ICD’s (Inland Container Depot) connected to Chennai port by these National highways.

  • Anna Salai (NH45) connects South of Tamil Nadu to the port.
  • Periyar EVR Road (NH4) connects West of Tamil Nadu and South of Karnataka to the port. This highway connects Bangalore to Chennai port.
  • Chennai-Kolkata Road (NH5) connects Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and further northern states to the port.
  • Proposed Elevated Express highway connecting NH4 from outskirts of Chennai to Chennai port.
